This recipe for an easy masala chai makes a delicious, robust cup that's perfect as your daily morning bevvy.
Our Masala Chai Blend combines all the chai spices you love—like green cardamom, fennel, clove, black pepper, and cinnamon—with medium-strength, full-bodied black tea. All you need to do is mix a spoonful of the blend with the milk of your choice and water, plus your desired sweetener, bring to a boil and simmer. Then, strain and enjoy, that's all!
Please note: This recipe uses our Masala Chai Blend, which is a combination of black tea and spices in one tin. If you prefer to customize your ratios of black tea and spices, we have the perfect 3-Step Chai recipe for you. And if you want to completely DIY your chai and make a fresh spice blend yourself, see the recipe for Sana's Spiced Chai (from scratch).
Ingredients
Methods
- Combine all the ingredients in a small saucepan over medium-high heat, and bring to a boil.
- Reduce to the high end of medium-low and simmer for another 3 minutes. Repeat this boil-and-simmer process 1 to 2 times. (This is the step that gives your chai a creamy, caramel-y mouthfeel.)
- Strain through a fine-mesh strainer into a cup, taste, and sweeten with more jaggery, if you wish. Enjoy steaming hot.
For iced chai
Use 1½ cups of cow’s or plant-based milk (the ice will dilute it!) instead of milk and water, and follow the method above, but strain and let cool for 10 minutes, and then pour over ice.
