Sirarakhong Hathei Chillies come from Manipur in Northeast India. These chillies are traditionally wood-smoked on bamboo mats in the village of Sirarakhong, which gives them a flavor profile unlike any other Indian chilli you've tried. Deep, smoky heat with notes of oak smoke, whiskey barrel warmth, and rich, chipotle-like flavor, this Northeast India spice makes slow-cooked pork, pasta, and roasted vegetables taste profoundly more interesting.

Smoky, chipotle-like heat.

Legend has it that Hāthei chillis were first sighted by the Naga ancestors of Sirārakhong village in Manipur on a hunting trip many generations ago. Since then, this long, red, smoky chilli has been grown in every backyard garden.

These chillies are proudly grown by Hill Wild, a cooperative of farmers in Sirārakhong. By sharing their prized chillies with the world, they hope to champion indigenous food systems, restore biodiversity, and share the joyful food of their ancestors with the world.

Hāthei chillies come from the hills of Manipur, located in the Indo-Burma Biodiversity Hotspot. The richness of this ecosystem and the indigenous practices of the farmers are what give these chillies their incredible flavor. Many nearby villages have tried to grow the Sirārakhong Hāthei chillies, but something about the terroir of Sirārakhong produces the very best!

Hāthei chillies owe their smoky flavor to their processing: The chillies are allowed to dry on the plant for maximum flavor, and are then wood-smoked on traditional bamboo mats, adding notes of bacon and chipotle to their fruity heat.

What makes Diaspora Spice Co.'s Sirarakhong Hathei Chilli unique?

Diaspora Spice Co.'s Sirarakhong Hathei Chilli is a single-origin heirloom variety grown in Manipur. It offers a naturally smoky, earthy flavor with moderate heat, making them an excellent choice for adding depth and complexity to a wide range of dishes.

How can I use Diaspora Spice Co.'s Sirarakhong Hathei Chilli?

Use our Sirarakhong Hathei smoked chilli powder in curries, lentils, marinades, stir-fries, or roasted vegetables. It also works well as a finishing spice to add gentle heat and smoky depth to soups, eggs, and grilled meats.

What makes Indian chilli powder different?

Indian chilli powder varies by region and chilli variety, offering different levels of heat, sweetness, smokiness, and colour. Many heirloom varieties are valued for their complex flavour rather than just their spiciness.

What is heirloom chilli?

Heirloom chillies are traditional varieties that have been preserved and grown over generations rather than bred for mass production. They often have more distinctive flavour, aroma, and character than conventional commercial chillies.

What is a good chilli powder recipe to try?

Chilli powder is commonly used in curries, stews, soups, spice rubs, roasted vegetables, and marinades. It can also add depth to dips, sauces, and homemade seasoning blends.

What is the best way to store the spices?

Store them in an airtight container in a dark, dry place. Do not store spices in direct sunlight, as this will shorten their shelf life.

Do you sell wholesale?

We do! You can search for our wholesalers using our store locator here. And if you are a wholesaler and don’t see yourself on the locator, please email wholesale@diasporaco.live and we will add you to this ASAP! Thank you!

When do the spices expire? How long do they last?

Most of the spices are good 2 years from the mill date, which is listed on the harvest label sticker on the jar or bag. That being said, our spices are extremely potent and fresh as we take incredible care to source yearly and aim for quality, so 2 years is our most conservative guideline, compared to most spices in the grocery store which are often 5-10 years old upon purchase.

Are all your spices organic?

Our farm partners have been cultivating spices using practices that go "beyond organic" for well over five years. Although they haven't obtained USDA certification yet, this is primarily because the initial certification can be costly and may lead to cycles of debt. To meet USDA standards, four years of inspections and certificates are required after the first certification. However, we consider this process redundant and unnecessary since we conduct thorough testing on every batch we procure. It's a prerequisite for Diaspora Co. to select farm partners whose soil health and agricultural practices align with our internal standards of growing food regeneratively.
