BRAND NEW APRONS DROP 11/4

Yellow Bird Apron

Regular price  $100
Sale price  $100 Regular price

Meet the Yellow Bird Apron, made with our friends at Barefoot, the Sri Lanka-based, artist-led design house known for its handweaving, local craftsmanship, and chemical-free dyes. We fell for one of their textiles, Yellow Bird, worked with them on a pattern we loved, and named the apron after it. Woven from 100% cotton in bright pink, yellow, and orange, it keeps your clothes stain-free on busy kitchen days and brings a pop of color to your cooking. We went through a few rounds of samples to land on an adjustable neck strap and extra-long waist ties, so it fits comfortably across different body types.

Meet the maker
For more than 60 years, Barefoot has been weaving color, craft, and community into everyday life in Sri Lanka. Founded on artist Barbara Sansoni’s belief that work should come to women, not the other way around, Barefoot’s weaving centers give women the flexibility to work where and when it makes sense for their lives. Their focus goes beyond making beautiful textiles: it’s about teaching skills, passing knowledge between generations, and keeping the art of weaving alive. From dyeing and winding the yarn to setting the loom, weaving, cutting, and sewing, the apron passes through many careful hands before it reaches your kitchen. Look closely and you’ll even find the maker’s signature on the finished piece: a little reminder of the person behind something you’ll use every day.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is the apron made of?

Barefoot x Diaspora apron is woven from 100% cotton yarn, sourced as unbleached hanks imported to Sri Lanka from India. Two yarn counts: 2/20s and 10/1, give the twill fabric a finer and a coarser feel across the warp and weft.

What are the dimensions of the apron?

The Barefoot x Diaspora Apron is a 100% cotton apron that is 29.5 inches wide and 33 inches tall, with a 7x7 front pocket. The waist straps are 47” each, and the adjustable neck strap is 19 at its shortest setting.

Where is the apron made?

The Barefoot x Diaspora Co. Apron is made in Sri Lanka by Barefoot, a textile house with more than 60 years of weaving history, built on founder Barbara Sansoni's belief that everyone who works there should leave with a skill. Barefoot brings work to women through weaving centers and home looms, and many weavers have been with the company for decades.

How is the apron made?

At Barefoot, Sri Lanka, the apron begins as a design, then moves through dyeing, winding, loom setup, weaving, cutting, and sewing. Barefoot's weavers work on two-pedal looms, and each stage is prepared by hand! The brand also brings work to women, setting up looms at weaving centers or in weavers' homes, so every maker can earn an income and pass on a skill.

How is the yarn dyed?

Barefoot dyes its yarn at its own dye plant using Novacron dyes, chosen for Bluesign, Oeko-Tex, and GOTS compliance. A wastewater treatment facility certified by Sri Lanka's Central Environment Authority treats the water from dyeing.

How do I care for the apron?

Wash the apron by hand, or in a cold, gentle machine cycle with mild detergent, and avoid bleach. Drying in the shade keeps the colors looking their best.

Will the apron colors fade?

Barefoot colors may fade with prolonged direct sunlight, which is why shade drying is recommended. With normal kitchen use, fading is expected to be minimal.

How long will my apron last?

Barefoot makes textiles on the belief that well-made things should last a lifetime. Color fading is expected to be minimal, and the cotton yarn is sturdy and durable, made for everyday kitchen use.
